THE WAY AHEAD

Posted on Thursday, 17 February 2011 03:29PM by
Clergy from East Newcastle Deanery spent a hard working afternoon clearing the woodlands at Shepherds Dene during their annual retreat. The idea was proposed by  Canon Peter Dodd who has been helping the staff at Shepherds Dene restore the magnificent beech woods. The Area Dean, Kevin Hunt said “ everyone really enjoyed a couple of hours clearing the woods and came back feeling they had earned their afternoon tea”.
The walk through the woods will  be open to visitors to look for wildlife or to sit quietly as a new feature at Shepherds Dene this summer.  The clergy group was also one of the first to try out the new showers and toilets installed during January and was very impressed.
George Hepburn, the Warden, said “ we’ve made a lot of improvements to the house and grounds and now look forward to a busy summer programme”. Highlights include Brother Damian’s retreat on ‘The Golden Age of Northumbria” in May, a reading week about Victorian novels in June and Revd Paul Judson’s annual art and photography holiday in July. There are also days on holiness with Judy Hirst, music evenings with Canon Robert Gage, walking retreats and bird watching days.
