ROBINSON RETURNS

Posted on Wednesday, 22 September 2010 04:17PM by G Hepburn
One of the great treasures of Shepherds Dene has been restored to its former glory. The trustees have commissioned the restoration of the oil painting by W R Robinson that hangs on the main staircase. If featured on The Antiques Roadshow a few  years ago which led to a lot of speculation about its composition.

Robinson was a well known 19th artist who painted another similar view of the Cathedral that hangs in Durham Town Hall. The Shepherds Dene painting dates from 1845 and show the Cathedral from the Pimilico / South St area. It was probably part of the extensive  art collection of Geoffrey and  Ethel Newall who gave the house to Diocese of Newcastle in 1946.

The painting was  restored in the studios of  Annabel Remnant and Jude Proudlock. It was extremely dirty and the full range of colour and detail in the painting can now be appreciated. There will be a talk about the work by Douglas Pocock of Durham City Trust on Wednesday 22nd September with supper and tickets are available from Shepherds Dene at £15 ( Friends £13.50)

George Hepburn said that " The trustees felt  we should preserve a few of the original gifts and fine works in the house as they are part of the heritage we inherited. It is wonderful to see the painting is such vivid colours again as if it was paintred yesterday"

Picture shows the restored painting with Annabel and Jude looking proudly on.
