The real beauty of Shepherds Dene is its peaceful setting and atmosphere.  The estate is hidden from the road and not obvious to the casual traveller.  It is, however, easily accessible by car and there are frequent train and bus services to Riding Mill village.  By car Shepherds Dene is  30 minutes from Newcastle and 40 minutes from Durham.

Shepherds Dene is only ten minutes drive from the junctions of the A68, A695 and A69.  Take the signs into Riding Mill village.  Continue through the village, past the Wellington pub and up the hill past the speed camera (slowly!).  At the end of the village take the left turn up a steep hill signposted 'Shepherds Dene and Slaley'.  We are about one mile along this road on the left.  If you are approaching Riding Mill from Hexham, look out for the turning on the right as you approach the village.  It involves a sharp turn back on yourself at 'five o clock' from this direction.

Shepherds Dene is a 30 minute uphill walk from Riding Mill village.

There are good public transport links and we can arrange a taxi from Riding Mill train station (local charges apply) if you have a larger group then we can give you details of local mini bus companies (local charges apply). Subject to staffing at Shepherds Dene on your arrival date it may be possible to collect you at a cost of £3.00.  There are regular trains and buses to Newcastle, which connect to East Coast mainline and national bus services . The journey time from London to Newcastle is about 3 hours.  In the opposite direction, trains to Carlisle connect to West Coast services.

Shepherds Dene is in an ideal location to explore Northumberland, County Durham and Tyne and Wear. The market towns of Corbridge and Hexham are within easy reach and Hadrian’s Wall is a 30 min drive away.

There is good walking from the front door and further afield in Hexhamshire.  Corbridge is a wonderful Northumberland village full of interesting shops only a few minutes away and the market town of Hexham is a short drive or bus ride.  Both Newcastle and Durham are within easy reach for visitors who want to smaple the cultural life of the region.
